Lady Hardinge Medical College established in 1916 is a pioneer in the field of medical education & has the unique distinction of being the only medical college in India for training women undergraduate students. LHMC was founded by Lady Hardinge of Penhurst the wife of then Viceroy of India to provide an opportunity for women to study medicine as prevailing cultures at that time did not allow women to study in co- educational institutions.
Lady Hardinge Medical College spread across a campus of 60 acres, was formally opened by Lord Hardinge in February 1916 with Dr Kate Platt M.D as it’s first Principal & with 14-16 students. Over the years the LHMC has increased admission capacity for the MBBS course to accommodating over 200 seats. Lady Hardinge medical college has also planned a comprehensive re-development of the institution to accommodate increased faculty, staff, bed strength, new buildings & required infrastructure.
Lady Hardinge Medical College started as an autonomous institution managed by a Governing Body & in 1978 the management was taken over by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare under an Act of Parliament. LHMC has 2 teaching hospitals including Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital and Kalawati Saran Child Hospital, with 877 and 350 beds respectively. LHMC is a WHO collaborating centre for reference and training in streptococcal diseases for South East Asia % a surveillance center for AIDS.
LHMC has done a yeoman service in furthering of medical education for women in India & has several illustrious alumni to its credit; some of whom are Dr Sumedha Khanna of W.H.O & Dr Saroj Pachauri of Ford Foundation. Lady Hardinge medical college has the credit of producing 6125 graduates & 2564 postgraduates in various medical & surgical specialties. LHMC provides tertiary level healthcare facilities to the people residing in Delhi & adjoining areas.
