Jammu is the largest city in the Jammu region, located on the banks of the Tawi River. It is also the winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also known as the City of Temples due to the large number of historical temples located within the city. The Central University of Jammu was established on August 8, 2011, with the appointment of the first Vice-Chancellor. It was founded by the Central Universities Act, of 2009.
The University began (2011-12) with three postgraduate courses in English, Economics, and Applied Mathematics at Temporary Academic Block (TAB-I) at Sidhra Bypass Road, Jammu. In the following academic session (2012-13), five PG Courses were added to the Temporary Academic Block (TAB-II) at Sainik Colony Extension: Computer Science, Educational Studies, Human Resource Management, Environmental Sciences, and Travel and Tourism Management.
Since the third session (2013-14), all departments have been operating from the TAB in Sainik Colony. During the 2014-2015 academic year, four new postgraduate courses were introduced: Public Policy & Public Administration, National Security Studies, Social Work, and Mass Communication and New Media. In addition, the University provides an Integrated M.Phil.-Ph.D. program in eight fields.
The university accepts CUET UG scores for admission to its UG courses. Admission to postgraduate courses at CUJ is based on CUET PG scores. GAT-BET scores are also considered for admission to the M.Sc. degree at CUJ Jammu. SLET/DBT-JRF/UGC/NET/SET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE scores are accepted for admission to the Ph.D. program at CUJ Jammu.

The Central University of Jammu provides for students from all over the country. It offers limited accommodation for hostels in rented buildings that are affordable and close to the current setup. Currently, there are two hostels for boys and two for girls. The rooms at the hostel are well-ventilated and furnished with basic facilities. The hostels include a well-running mess.
