Dr. G. Ramachandran and Dr. T. S. Soundaram Ramachandran, two contemporary disciples of Mahatma Gandhi, founded the Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) in 1956. The innovative ideology of Nai Talim served as the institute's foundation. The ideology intends to bridge the cognitive and practical components, emphasize the total development of learners, and place a heavy emphasis on skill development through value-based education. Since its inception in 1956, GRI has always promoted higher education and has pioneered higher education in rural areas.
Best practices at the Institute include the responsibility to promote and sustain the aspects of Indian cultural heritage that have withstood the test of time and continue to be relevant in modern times. As a result, in the traditional Gandhian way, the institute is dedicated to promoting communal harmony, humane government, and inclusive rural development. It strives for a balance between the old ideals of simple and spiritual life that should be preserved and the new ones that have been tempered by modernity, rationalism, and science. With these values in place, the Institute seeks to groom and prepare the student community for seizing promising chances and confronting emerging problems in the twenty-first century.
The Institute delivers academic programs in rural development, rural economics, extension education, rural-oriented sciences, development administration, rural sociology, English, Tamil, and Indian languages, etc. The institute offers B.Tech. course in civil engineering focusing on habitat development, M.Tech. in renewable energy, and B.Sc. in Agriculture curriculum.
