The Gondwana University was established in the region that includes the districts of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli, according to a unanimous resolution voted by the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on July 23, 2010. Rajesh Tope, who was the minister of higher and technical education at the time, proposed the resolution. Following subsection (2) of section 3 of the Maharashtra Universities Act of 1994, a notification was issued to establish the new university. Gondwana University was established on September 27, 2011, by the separation of RTMNU, Nagpur. It took until August 2012 for the formal inauguration to take place.
Gondwana University was founded to serve the educational needs of the economically, socially, and culturally deprived regions of Gadchiroli and Chandrapura. Various departments of the University are History, Commerce, Management, English, Mathematics, Sociology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer science, Applied Economics, and Mass Communication.
