The Harcourt Butler Technical University, Kanpur has 4 schools that offer thirteen undergraduate programs in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, information technology, leather technology, mechanical engineering, biochemical engineering, food technology, oil technology, paint technology, and plastic technology. It also offers a master's degree program, full-time and part-time M.Tech. programs in a wide range of disciplines, and is about to launch a full-time Ph.D. program.
The University intends to start several programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels shortly in response to the emerging need. It is one of the 127 technical institutions in India that received support from the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA) for the Technical Engineering Educational Quality Improvement Project, the first World Bank project in higher education in India, during phase one (2004-2009).
With a focus on research and development and incubation in the fields of engineering, technology, basic and applied sciences, humanities, social science, management, and other professional courses, Harcourt Butler Technical University Kanpur was established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2016. HBTU is named after the Governor of the United Provinces in British India, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler.
Its to become a leading residential university. The mission of HBTU is to advance the study, research, and innovation in the field of engineering in higher education, improve skill development through continuing education programs, and attain excellence in technical higher education. The University has two campuses, the east campus (77 acres) and the west campus (271 acres) which are located around three kilometers apart.

The East Campus and West Campus make up the two campuses that collectively make the Harcourt Butler Technical University. It is almost three kilometers between these two campuses. There are two male hostels on the east campus. Additionally, it includes some quarters for administrative officers. Six male hostels are located on the West Campus. Additionally, the majority of the university's faculty and staff reside on the West Campus.
