LLM Colleges Admission

LLM Admission in India offers a great range of career prospects to the students. Admission to LLM is purely based on merit and the performance of the students in their Bachelor’s degree and the entrance test conducted by the Government of India. LLM Admission principles and rules are laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Master of Legislative Law is a two-yearpost-graduation degree program that helps the students in acquiring paramount excellence in legal studies. Students can also aspire to pursue a doctoral degree in Legislative Law after the completion of their Master’s degree program.

LLM Admission Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates seeking admission to the two years LLM program in India should have completed their under graduation degree program in legislative law (LLB) from any college / University / board recognized by the Bar Council of India.
  • The candidates must have secured a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in their Bachelor’s degree program. The candidates belonging to SC / ST and other reserved category are provided a relaxation of 5 – 10 % in their aggregate score.
  • The admission for Foreign nationals has a slightly different rule.
    • The candidates must have an academic record of LLB or equivalent degree recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) / Association of Indian Universities.
    • The candidates should have a minimum score of 55% or equivalent grade in their academic record of LLB.
    • The candidates are assessed for their written and spoken English Communication. Admission is granted to the foreign nationals based on their performance in the personal interview in terms of their aptitude and capacity.

LLM Admission Procedure in India

Students who aspire to pursue LLM Course in India are expected to be aware of the following admission procedure for a full time LLM program.

  • The admission to two years LLM program is done through the All India Entrance Test (AILET) conducted every year. The colleges also accept various other entrance examinations hosted by various other legal establishments.
  • Candidates who have completed their Bachelor’s degree and also those who are awaiting the results of the qualifying examination can appear for the entrance exams. However, the applicants are expected to produce a proof of LLB pass certificate at the time of admission confirmation.
  • Usually 70 – 80 seats are reserved per college for LLM course. However, the following reservations are entitled.
    • Foreign nationals – 10 – 12%
    • Scheduled Caste – 15%
    • Scheduled Tribes – 7.5%
    • Candidates with special needs – 5%
  • The foreign nationals should possess a citizenship and a valid passport of any other country other then India. They are exempted from taking the entrance exam for the LLM course. However, all other eligibility terms and conditions remain the same.
  • If the reserved seats for foreign nationals are still vacant, those seats are filled by General Merit students in the order of their merit.

LLM Professional Course (LLM Pro)

The LL.M (Pro) is a Master’s degree program through a blend of distance education and contact learning. A person who has completed his/her graduation, in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% marks and has been in service, or has had professional experience of atleast three years will be eligible to enroll for the program.The main aim of LLM professional program is to enhance the academic excellence of the graduates in their professional services. Candidates pursuing LLM professional course is not entitled to the career roles in which the minimum qualification of eligibility is LLM. The candidates on completion of their LLM through this mode is also not eligible for taking up the National Eligibility Test conducted by UGC or any other equivalent test.

The eligibility criteria for LLM programs in India is to have a bachelor's degree in law (LLB) or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university. Some universities also require an entrance exam score.
Some of the entrance exams include CLAT, Symbiosis Law School Admission Test, etc.
