In the year 1820, the college had the identification as the ideal hospital of the East India Company. Later in 1827, Dr. D. Mortimer was designated as the Superintendent of the hospital who had the private medical hall which was dictated as a medical school. After 20 years, the team of faculty had expanded, the duration of the program extended and the syllabus was made completely.

In the early part of 1850, the academy committee presented proposals to the government to allow the status of a hospital into the college. The Government of Madras conceded the request following from 1st October 1850, it converted to Madras Medical College which was previously known as the Government General Hospital. The programs offered in the college are affiliated to “The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University”.

Madras Medical College Admission

Madras Medical College admissions are offered to MBBS, MD, MS B. Pharm B.Sc Nursing, Post Basic Nursing, Basic B.Sc Nursing programs based on the merit of the qualifying entrance exams like NEET-UG and NEET-PG. After the results are announced students also have to appear for the counseling conducted by the college. DM and M.Ch programs admission is based on NEET SS scores. Students also have to appear for the All India level NEET counseling where seats will be allotted based on NEET scores.

Eligibility Criteria for MBBS:

  • The candidate must have passed the 10+2 level with an aggregate of 50% of marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology as mandatory subjects.
  • It is mandatory to get a valid score in National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • Transfer Certificate of Class 12 from the last qualified institution
  • The students’ age should not be less than 17 and more than 25.

Admission Process:

  • The admission to the MBBS program is based on the score secured in the NEET entrance exam following counseling.
  • Selection in Madras Medical College is done through All India Medical Counseling as All India Quota is 15 % and the rest 85% of MBBS seats through Tamil Nadu state medical counseling as State Quota conducted by state medical authorities.

  • M.B.B.S. Degree from any Indian university recognized by the Medical Council of India & and obtained permanent registration from any of the State Medical Councils.
  • The selection of students for admission to the M.D. (Anesthesia) course is based on the rank obtained in the Tamil Nadu Post Graduate Entrance Examination for 50% of seats for students who have completed their M.B.B.S from Tamil Nadu.
  • The remaining 50 % of seats are filled based on rank obtained in the NEET-PG conducted by NTA.
