In the year 1820, the college had the identification as the ideal hospital of the East India Company. Later in 1827, Dr. D. Mortimer was designated as the Superintendent of the hospital who had the private medical hall which was dictated as a medical school. After 20 years, the team of faculty had expanded, the duration of the program extended and the syllabus was made completely.
In the early part of 1850, the academy committee presented proposals to the government to allow the status of a hospital into the college. The Government of Madras conceded the request following from 1st October 1850, it converted to Madras Medical College which was previously known as the Government General Hospital. The programs offered in the college are affiliated to “The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University”.

The college has a new campus with a six-floor structure for the college constructed on land covering 325,000 square feet on the past central prison bases in 2010 and was completed in 2012. The college has approximately 1,250 students, 500+ faculty and staff members. The new building started functioning in 2013 and the previous MMC buildings are turned to be departments of the college of pharmacy, school of nursing and also provide students with the lately added courses of speech learning, radiotherapy, radio-diagnosis etc.
Madras Medical College admissions are offered to MBBS, MD, MS B. Pharm B.Sc Nursing, Post Basic Nursing, Basic B.Sc Nursing programs based on the merit of the qualifying entrance exams like NEET-UG and NEET-PG. After the results are announced students also have to appear for the counseling conducted by the college. DM and M.Ch programs admission is based on NEET SS scores. Students also have to appear for the All India level NEET counseling where seats will be allotted based on NEET scores.
