MBBS Stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The course duration is 5½ years (4½ years of classroom study followed by a year of rotating internship). The 4½ years of class room study is broken into 3 phases of 18 months each. Each phase of 18 months is known as Professional and is further divided into 3 semesters of 6 months each. There is a semester exam at the end of each semester and a Professional exam at the end of each professional. The third professional is devoted to monthly clinical work in the wards and departments of the hospital. In all there are 3 professional examinations, followed by practical and clinical examinations. Pass percentage required is 50 per cent.

Admission to MBBS in India is based on Entrance Test. Securing a seat for MBBS in India is very difficult and highly competitive. All the Government Medical Colleges in India except AIPMT or the State Entrance Test. However some of the Government Aided Medical Colleges Like AIIMS, Zipmer and St. John’s also conduct their own Entrance Test. Admission in Private medical colleges of India is also based on Entrance Test conducted either by the Government or Consortium of these colleges. All the private medical colleges in India also have 15 – 25 % NRI / Management Quota depending on the law of state. Direct Admission in MBBS is possible under Management Quota. However all Private medical colleges in India do not offer management quota.

Eligibility criteria for admission in MBBS course in India is strictly based on Regulations of Medical Council of India (MCI). The candidate willing to take admission in mbbs course in India must have passed the Class XIIth examination with PCB 50% for general Category & 40% for Backward Category. Direct Admission in MBBS under Management Quota, is restricted to 15 % of total intake which includes NRI Quota Admission too. Over Last one decade many private medical colleges have come up in India. All the private medical colleges in India have General Merit Quota, Management Quota and Non –Residential Indian (NRI) Quota. Some of the private medical colleges in India might accept Donation for MBBS in name of Development Fund or Building Fund to grant MBBS admission under management quota.
