The Rabindra Bharati University, also known as RBU was established in 1962 to commemorate the birth centenary of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian and Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. It is a State University named after Tagore committed to spreading his views and ideals through humanities, social sciences, art, and culture. Thus, Rabindra Bharati University stands out as a place for higher learning in the performing arts, fine arts, language, literature, and social sciences.

The university provides education through its 3 major faculties Arts, Fine Arts, and Visual Arts, housed in the Emerald Bower Campus while the main campus Jorasanko, now has a museum, and organizes various events such as Tagore’s birth and death anniversaries, or the Annual University Convocation, etc. Many popular actors like Manoj Mitra, Shambu Mitra, Sisir Bhaduri, Ahindra Chaudhuri, Jogesh Chowdhury, and Kumar Ray, and, famous singers like Suchitra Mitra, Sumitra Sen, and Maya Sen, painters such as Dharmanarayan Dasgupta and Shanu Lahiri, famous musicians such as Sisirkana Dhar Chowdhury, Pandit Swapan Chowdhury, and Timir Baran, and renowned art historians such as Shovan Som have all contributed to the university's academic pursuits over the years.

Keeping up with the times, the University embarked on new academic fields by adding courses in Geography, Human Rights and Human Development, Sociology, Environmental Studies, and Mathematics. As a university of higher learning, the institute has been offering a number of supplementary courses to fulfill the demands of the developing academic market interface, such as foreign language courses through the School of Languages and Culture.

Aside from that, the University provides training courses for competitive exams such as the NET and SET. The University also serves its social obligation by providing successful Adult Education, Computer Literacy, and a Special Education program for the differently-abled, particularly the visually impaired.

The University also considers students' extra-academic needs by providing them with hostel accommodations, particularly for female students, and by providing financial assistance for students in exceptional circumstances. In other words, the University administration continues to work tirelessly to provide the best possible facilities to students. The University also organizes placement sessions with firms and MNCs to familiarise students with the market and help them find suitable jobs.

Rabindra Bharati University Hostel

Rabindra Bharati University provides hostel accommodation for the students. The University currently has five student hostels, two for boys (one for SC/ST boys) and three for girls. Construction on another boys' hostel is now in progress. The boys' hostel has a total intake capacity of 145, while the girls' hostels have a capacity of 50.
