SAARC University

The South Asian University was proposed by the Indian Prime Minister during the 13th SAARC Summit in 2005 to establish a Centre of Excellence with contributions from SAARC countries. The SAU Project Office, led by Prof. GK Chadha, was set up in 2008. After securing approvals and designing a campus by a Nepalese firm, construction began in 2014.

Offering doctoral and master’s programs in seven fields, SAU aims to have 12 faculties and a flagship Institute of South Asian Studies, with 5000 students and 500 teachers. It emphasizes research and post-graduate education, with degrees recognized by the University Grants Commission of India and other SAARC countries. Funded by the Indian government for capital costs and shared operational costs among SAARC members, SAU also plans to seek international funding. Predominantly admitting students and hiring faculty from SAARC countries, it provides heavily subsidized tuition, with provisions for non-SAARC participants.
