Sri Krishnadevaraya University, established in 1981, is a public institution honoring the patron of knowledge and the arts, Sri Krishnadevaraya, from the Vijayanagara Empire. It originated as a Postgraduate Centre affiliated with Sri Venkateswara University in 1967-68 and gained autonomy by 1976. The university attained the title of 'University' in 1981 and became an affiliating University in 1988. Notably, the Kurnool Postgraduate Center, previously under the university's jurisdiction since 1993, achieved independent university status in 2008. Additionally, the self-financed Sri Krishnadevaraya University College of Engineering & Technology commenced in 2006.

The Colleges of Arts have 13 departments and provide 1 UG course and 18 PG courses. The College of Science with its 16 departments offers 19 PG courses. College of Engineering and Technology which was started in 2006-07, offers M. Tech. in three branches and B. Tech. in five branches. The College of Education provides B.Ed and M. Ed courses. SKU College of Pharmacy which was started in 2008-2009, offers B. Pharm and M. Pharmacy with three specializations.
