Anna University, established on 4th September 1978, is a unitary university named after the late Dr. C.N. Annadurai, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Formed by integrating four renowned technical institutions in Chennai—College of Engineering (CEG, 1794), Alagappa College of Technology (ACT, 1944), Madras Institute of Technology (MIT, 1949), and School of Architecture & Planning (SAP, 1957)—Anna University is located in southern Chennai. In 2001, Anna University became an affiliating university for all engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, reverting to a unitary type in 2010, and then back to an affiliating university in 2012. It now encompasses four university department campuses, 13 constituent colleges, three regional campuses (Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore), and 593 affiliated colleges, ensuring uniform quality in engineering education across the state.
