Cotton University, established in 1901, and initially known as Cotton College, was upgraded to Cotton University in 2017. The institute was founded by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the ancient British province of Assam. In 1948, it was designated as a constituent college of Guwahati University. The college was the epicenter of Assam's independence movement, as well as several literary and cultural exchanges that solidified the state's place in India.
The university is accredited by NAAC, approved by UGC, and was ranked one of the top 200 institutions in the country by NIRF in May 2020. The university has separate hostel facilities for girls and boys. At present the university has 5 boys' hostels and 3 girls' hostels. Two boys’ hostels are under construction now.
