Gangadhar Meher University (GMU), Sambalpur was established as a unitary institution of higher learning on May 30, 2015. Gangadhar Meher College (Autonomous) was replaced by the newly formed University. Gangadhar Meher College, one of the oldest and largest in Odisha, was founded in 1944 as a result of the strong initiative, determination, and persistent efforts of the people of Sambalpur, particularly intellectuals and academics, and their ardent desire for quality education. Previously known as Sambalpur College, it was renamed Gangadhar Meher College in 1949 after Gangadhar Meher, a great Odia poet and a worthy son of the soil.
The College began on a small base, with only 192 students enrolled. With the passing of time, it expanded and grew in stature. Degree programs in Arts and Commerce were started in 1944, and B.Sc. programs were added in 1957. When post-graduate departments were started at the College in 1964, it marked an important milestone. Another milestone period came in 1983 when the institution began offering M.Phil. programs in a variety of domains. Pre-Doctoral coursework in four subjects was also introduced in 2012 to fulfill the demand for higher education and research.
The institution's main aim was to serve the needs of underprivileged students in this tribal-dominated part of the state. In the years that followed, the institution played the role well. The College was able to mark out a distinct identity for itself in Odisha's educational system. It began operating as an autonomous college in 1991 and was governed and managed by statutory and non-statutory organizations appointed by the UGC. The UGC granted this university autonomy based on its academic repute, institutional management quality, and responsive administrative structure.
Furthermore, the UGC recognized the university as a "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" in the 2004-05 academic year. The institution added another feather to its cap when it received an "A" rating from the NAAC in recognition of its outstanding performance during the 2015-16 academic year. The newly established G.M. University has taken up the leadership role of G.M. College (Autonomous) and is set to rise to new heights of academic achievement in the coming years.
The University provides teaching and research facilities to ensure that Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Research programs on a variety of subjects function smoothly. This university currently serves the needs of around 5500 students while also providing services to society as a whole. Under the creative leadership of the current Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Atanu Kumar Pati, it has already made a mark in the academic field by providing high-quality education and regularly organizing national and international level seminars and workshops.

Gangadhar Mehar University offers hostel facilities to its students. At the university, boys and girls have separate hostels. The campus has four hostels for boys and 3 for girls, with a total capacity of 550 boys and 450 girls. The hostel rooms are spacious and well-furnished. The hostel premises is monitored by CCTV and safety surveillance cameras around the clock. A round-the-clock housekeeping service keeps the hostel rooms clean and safe. GMU's hostel staying is a pleasant and memorable experience.
