The Gujarat Agricultural University was established in June 1972. In 2004 the University was split into 4 campuses and GAU is not in operation anymore. The four campuses of GAU were converted into four independent universities on May 1, 2004. One of them is Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University (SDAU).

On May 1, 2004, the former GAU (Gujarat Agricultural University) was quadruplicated, becoming the SDAU, which has jurisdiction over seven districts: Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, the Aravalli, Patan, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, and Kachchh. The main campus, Sardarkrushinagr, is situated at the foothills of the "Aravalli" mountain range and offers a suitable atmosphere for learning and research.
