UPSC Syllabus

The UPSC 2025 Exam for Civil Services began with the Preliminary Exam held on May 25, 2025, and the Main Examination is scheduled to start from August 22, 2025.

The UPSC CSE syllabus is structured into three key stages:

  • The Preliminary Examination – an objective-type screening test.
  • The Main Examination – a descriptive written exam assessing in-depth knowledge.
  • The Interview (Personality Test) – the final stage evaluating a candidate’s suitability for civil services.

Each stage is designed to progressively test a candidate’s intellectual depth, decision-making ability, and administrative aptitude.

Preliminary Exam consists of two papers of an objective type carrying a maximum of 400 marks.

General Studies Paper-I Syllabus

It comprises 100 questions, broadly covering the following topics, and carries a maximum of 200 marks to be completed within 2 hours.

  • Current events of National & International importance.
  • History of India & Indian National Movement.
  • Indian & World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India & the World.
  • Indian Polity & Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic & Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental ecology, biodiversity & climate change – that do not require subject specialization.
  • General Science.

UPSC Syllabus for General Studies Paper-II

It comprises 80 questions from the following topics, carrying a maximum of 200 marks to be solved in 2 hours.

  • Comprehension.
  • Interpersonal skills, including communication skills.
  • Logical reasoning & analytical ability.
  • Decision making & problem solving.
  • General mental ability.
  • Basic numeracy (numbers & their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level)

CSAT is a qualifying paper, with a minimum qualifying mark fixed at 33%. A candidate must appear in both the Papers of the IAS Prelim Exam for evaluation.
