Why is Learn, Unlearn and Relearn imperative for our growth?
Every civilization has placed a high value on education for thousands of years. Learning on its own is no longer sufficient. To be successful, you must master the success cycle of learning, unlearning, and relearning.
Learning is necessary for our survival. Similar to how food nourishes our bodies, information and ongoing education do the same for our minds. Continuous learning is now an essential part of developing critical thinking skills and discovering new ways to interact with people from different cultures. Learning is the process of gaining new knowledge, understanding, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. Humans, animals, and even machines can also learn.
We know that the human brain is enormously complex and remains a mystery to us. As a result, we understand learning—a primary function of the brain—in a variety of ways.

“A change in human disposition or capability that persists over a period of time and it is not simply ascribable to the process of growth “- Robert Gange
Why? Because, in today's fast-paced world, unlearning and relearning are just as important as learning. Continuous, acquisitive learning is no longer the norm.
The illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn- Alvin Tofler
What should you learn?
There is a greater need now than ever before to study and keep learning. But it can be difficult to decide what to study in our "always-on" society. To help your focus, explore your medium and long-term goals. To achieve those goals you need to improve your performance in your current role, prepare for future roles, develop your current expertise, or broaden your expertise into their field.
Learn, Unlearn, Relearn cycle
You must also know what you are willing to give up. Unlearning is the process of discarding what is no longer true, relevant, unpleasant, or helpful. When we learn, the world changes. We need to learn what is holding us back to improve ourselves.
Four types of unlearning
Some types of unlearning and relearning are easier than others. It's relatively easy to let go of outdated knowledge; it's much more difficult to let go of unhelpful habits and behaviors. Unlearning and relearning our sense of identity may be the most difficult.
- Knowledge and Assumption : It's a classic case of thinking based on outdated information and assumptions. It's a great illustration of the need to learn, unlearn, and relearn!
These spectacular failures litter the business world. Entire companies fail because they reach a strategic tipping point and their leaders fail to unlearn what has made them successful. - Unlearning and relearning skills : Skills of all kinds have a finite shelf life. If we believe we have 'life-long' skills that don't need to be relearned, we risk becoming obsolete.
We must constantly learn, unlearn, and relearn skills, whether it's how to use new technology or how to manage a new generation of employees. Here are five things we need to unlearn from school:
- Fear Mistake-in school we lose points for our mistakes.
- Fit In- School rewards for those who color inside the line.
- Wait for Instructions- follow the instruction and do as they want
- Learn just if the case
- Do not question the Authority
- Habit and behavior : We have the option of having a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. If we opt for the latter, we welcome the opportunity to develop new and more productive habits and behaviors. We can adopt new lifestyles that improve our health, knowledge, self-awareness, work-life balance or any other aspect of our lives that add value to our lives.
- Self-Identify At work, I was overburdened and not responding positively to the pressure. I realized I was making decisions based on my ego and the belief that "I know better than them." I wasn't listening or recognizing the needs of others when I was stressed. This was a wake-up call for me, and I'm working hard to become more aware of my flaws.
We can all learn, unlearn, and relearn more about ourselves. And an entire industry has sprung up to assist us, as managers and leaders, in doing so.
Process of unlearning and relearning
There is no magic to this, we need to be open to change. This involves :
- Willingness to accept the change
- Perseverance in the face of adversity
- The desire to embrace a“New You”
Embrace the cycle of Success
Investigate the concept of unlearning and relearning (set yourself some challenges based on the 4 types of unlearning, above)
- Request feedback in order to gain new perspectives on your behavior.
- Make certain that you are up to date on the knowledge that is relevant to your success.
- Spend time observing trends and practicing foresight.
- Reassess your skills and make sure they are 'future-proofed.'
- Investigate the concept of the growth mindset.
- Find a mentor who will both support and challenge you.
- To increase your self-awareness, use self-assessment tools.
For your success, remember to learn, unlearn, and relearn as a cycle!
