The Central University of Kashmir was established in 2009 by the Central Universities Act, 2009. The Central University of Jammu and Kashmir, along with 15 other Central Universities were established in 2009. The university was later divided into two campuses: the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) and the Central University of Jammu (CUJ).
The State government allocated 503 acres of land in Tulmulla and its surrounding areas in the Ganderbal district for the University's permanent campus. The University's administrative office was established in May 2009 at Baghi-Hyder, Hyderpora, Srinagar. The University then relocated to Sonwar, Srinagar. With the increase in Academic and Administrative operations, the University established 3 campuses in Srinagar's Nowgam district. The University relocated to Ganderbal in 2018 and now functions from the following campuses.
The University's main campus in Tulmulla is located over a wide geographic region with scenic surroundings, giving the university a tranquil ambiance perfect for a place of learning. The Central University of Kashmir has established 3 libraries, one each at its transit campus in Sonwar, academic blocks HMT and Magarmal Bagh in Srinagar, to provide students, faculty, and university staff with access to a wide range of books and publications. These libraries have a collection of over 5000 text and reference books, including books related to competitive examinations, for students who wish to appear in various competitive examinations such as IAS, IFS, KAS, NET, SET, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, CAT, MAT, Bank Probationary Officers examination. The Library subscribes to a number of prestigious national and international e-journals, publications, and newspapers. Under the UGC- INFONET Digital, the University subscribes to 500 journals and a few electronic databases.
Under the guidance of the University's Placement Officer, the Training and Placement Cell works to provide exceptional placement opportunities for students while also maintaining links with industry and research organizations. Throughout the year, the Cell arranges several activities to prepare students for campus selection programs. It attempts to provide a supportive environment for the University's Education in order to raise social consciousness and personality development.
The University has started two hostels, one for boys and one for girls, to provide safe, secure, and affordable residential housing to students traveling from rural regions of the state and other parts of the country. The hostels have a variety of amenities to make students' lives more comfortable and enjoyable. The rooms are well-ventilated and light, with fans and comfy furniture. The rooms also feature continuous power backup to ensure that students do not have any difficulties with their studies.
