Diverse student body, highly qualified faculty, administration that is not hesitant to experiment, and infrastructure. CAIL in many ways is a microcosm of India. We have students from more than 20 states in India and they come from varying economic backgrounds. We are one of the best employers among Law Colleges in Karnataka when it comes to employee satisfaction. Tutor system that we have introduced in the first year is another innovation. It helps the first-year student to get a mentor to guide him/her in both professional and personal matters. In research, our success is unparalleled. Within short span of five years, CAIL has brought out 44 books and numerous articles.
As we are affiliated to Karnataka State Law University, we are bound by the curriculum of the University. Though KSLU is continuously updating its curriculum to keep up to the changing needs of the legal system, many emerging areas of law do not find a place in the curriculum. In order to bridge this, CAIL has introduced several courses. These may be broadly divided into three categories. First, we have introduced several add on courses that familiarize the students to the emerging areas in law. International investment arbitration, infrastructure law and policy etc are examples of add on programmes offered by CAIL. It is compulsory for students to opt for at least two add-on courses in a semester. Second, training for Judicial Services Examination is made mandatory for our students. Third, in collaboration with KSLU and Christ Academy Institute of Advanced Studies, we are offering certificate courses in different areas. These courses cover a wide range of areas like foreign languages, software programmes etc. Sessions are conducted after regular class hours. As a lot of emphasis is given on skills training, these courses will help students in their placement opportunities.
We are only in our third year since inception and our first batch is yet to graduate. But we are working for ensuring best placement opportunities for our students. The internship system at CAIL is designed in such a way that our students get opportunities to work with the best law offices and firms in the country. As mentioned earlier, the training for Judicial Services Examination is another step that we have taken in this direction.
CAIL is planning to start post graduate (LL. M.) and research (Ph. D.) programmes shortly. Preparation of a ‘semester abroad module’ is another step in the planning stages. This would be designed in such a way that students from abroad can spend one semester in our campus. Ten years down the line, we want CAIL to be known as a centre of excellence in both teaching and research. Village lawyering is one area that we would like to focus in the coming years. We hope that within a short span, CAIL will be a preferred global destination for research in this area.
Diversity and national character are two hallmarks of our admission policy. It has been our endeavor from the beginning that students belonging to rural background and from low income families should not be denied admission. Towards this end we have reserved 25% of our seats to students hailing from Karnataka villages and another 25% for students from rural areas of other states. We also have very liberal scholarship policy that encourage students who have financial difficulties to complete their studies.
Candidate has to go through 2 rounds of interview.
