Gulbarga University was formed as the State University by the Act of the State Government of Karnataka on September 10, 1980, under Section 3 of the Karnataka State Universities Act 1976, as amended by the KSU Act 2000. The University Grants Commission (UGC) Act of 1956, Sections 2(f) and 12(b), recognize the University as an affiliating university.

From 1970 to 1980, it was a Post Graduate Centre of Karnataka University, Dharwad. Jnana Ganga, the main campus of the University with greenery spreading over 800 acres at Kalaburagi, a district headquarter with a post-graduate center at Aland, a taluka headquarter, is located in the north-eastern region of Karnataka. The nearest international airports are Hyderabad (about 230 kilometers), Mumbai (about 530 kilometers), and Bengaluru (about 600 kilometers).

The University serves the needs of Higher Education in the Kalyan Karnataka region by providing Undergraduate, Postgraduate (Master's), and Research (Doctoral) programs through Teaching, Research, and Extension activities. Gulbarga University's jurisdiction, which mostly covers Kalaburagi District, is a socioeconomically developing area protected under the special provision for development under Article 371(J) of the Indian Constitution. The university has a NAAC'B Grade (CGPA 2.91), KSURF - 4 Stars, and a QS RANK: 601-650.

Gulbarga University Hostel

Gulbarga University provides hostel facilities to its students. On the main campus, there are 5 hostels for men and 3 for women, accommodating more than 1,100 students. Additionally, the Women's Hostel offers accommodation for female research scholars. The university hostels offer amenities like boarding, indoor games, newspapers, magazines, reading rooms, visitors' rooms, common prayer/recreation halls, television, telephones, separate kitchen, dining hall, etc. to ensure that all students may live comfortably in each hostel. In an emergency, there is also access to medical facilities, transportation, etc.
