On November 24, 1969, Guru Nanak Dev University was established in Amritsar which is known for its rich cultural heritage of four centuries, and a living symbol of the historical and religious traditions of Sikhs. The university was established in honor of the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is both a residential and an affiliating university.
Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) focuses an emphasis on activities other than academics, as seen by its infrastructure, extracurricular activities, and national and international associations.

- Library
The University Library is named after the great Sikh scholar Bhai Gurdas, who had the honor of taking dictation from the religious fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, for the compilation of the ADI GRANTH, the Sikhs' holy scripture. The Bhai Gurdas Library was founded in March 1970. The University Library is an architectural marvel and masterpiece. This spectacular five-story, inverted pyramid-shaped building is visible from the university's front gate on the Grand Trunk Road. It is centrally positioned, and there are teaching departments all around it.
The Bhai Gurdas Library subscribes to 65 foreign journals and 124 Indian journals. In addition, the Library will receive approximately 150 journals as a gift. The library is an active member of the INFLIBNET UGC-Infonet e-journals Consortium Programme, which provides access to 7032+ e-journals and databases. Almost every discipline is covered in e-journals. In addition, Bhai Gurdas Library subscribes to over 2200 e-Journals and 4 databases. Bhai Gurdas Library also provides access to over 15612 ebooks from reputable publishers.
- Sports
The GNDU Department of Physical Education (Allied Teaching) organizes games and sports in the affiliated institutions in order to raise University teams in different fields. The department has received national attention for its cutting-edge sports facilities and outstanding performances at the inter-university, national, and international levels.
Aside from these national awards, it has also won the famous Osmania University Platinum Jubilee Trophy four times and ranked third once for obtaining the most points in women's sports, as well as the KRIDAMAHARISHI Trophy for best performance in men's competitions. 24 of its players have received the ARJUNA AWARD over the years.
The university’s sports complex includes an international quality Astro-turf Hockey stadium, an Olympic standard swimming pool stadium with separate facilities for training, diving, and competition, and exclusive playgrounds for all sports such as cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, lawn tennis, handball, softball, kho-kho, and kabaddi, among others.
- Hostel
Guru Nanak Dev University provides hostel facilities for students on the University campus. There are 3 hostels each for boys and 4 hostels for girls. The hostel rooms are big, well-furnished, and provided with Wi-Fi. The hostel surroundings are constantly monitored by CCTV and safety surveillance cameras. The hostel rooms are kept clean and safe by a 24-hour housekeeping service.
