KLE Medical College Belgaum was established in the year 1963 to meet the extreme shortage of the medical facilities of the then community under the aegis of KLE (Karnataka Lingayat Education) Society. With a vision to become "a centre of excellence in Medical Education, Research, and Health Care services at the National and International Level," the institution has been offering impeccable medical experience in all disciplines of Medical and Health Sciences along with a conducive environment of education and learning. Provisions of scholarships, research, critical thinking and interactive learning are abundantly practised in the institution.

Also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Belgaum, the institution is an erstwhile academic foundation testimony to the standards of the KLE Society. Bearer of 103 years of educational legacy, the KLE Society was formed upon the philosophy of equality, justice and prosperity, especially in the field of education and development. Presently, the society has been running over 205 educational institutions all across the state.

The Society was awarded deemed to be university status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, on the recommendation of the UGC (University Grant Commission) and the KLE University was born in the year 2006, 13th April. Formerly affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, JNMC presently carries the affiliation of the KLE University. The University has achieved NAAC 'A' grade and MHRD 'A' category status in the year 2011.

The university is known by the name KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (Deemed-to-be-University). Under this prestigious banner, the KLE Medical College Belgaum explores horizons of medical education and health care services. The institution envisions to come under top 10 medical colleges in India in the field of medical education, research & health care services with Dr. Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital (1400 bed), Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre (1000 bed) 3 Primary Health Centers and urban Health centers to become epicenter of all activities. It is a place where medical aspirants get transforms to responsible, potential, skilled health professionals of the industry.
