Pondicherry University is a collegiate public central university that was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The University is situated on a tranquil and beautiful campus of 800 acres adjacent to the picturesque Bay of Bengal, 10 kilometers from the town of Puducherry, in Kalapet. It is an affiliating university having satellite campuses in Karaikal and Port Blair, as well as jurisdiction over the Union Territory of Puducherry, Lakshwadeep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Pondicherry University is a reputed and esteemed university in India that is dedicated to sustainability and responsible conservation of the environment. The University has made a strong effort in recent years to create a green campus that represents its commitment to sustainability and good environmental resource management. To that aim, the University has built a complete vision, goal, and scope for its Green Campus Initiative, which addresses the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and waste and pollution, as well as promoting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals at all levels.

The Pondicherry University campus has an academic building, library, computer center, cafeteria, sports facility, health center, bank, hostels, and shopping complex in addition to academic and administrative blocks.

Some of the facilities at Pondicherry University include:

  • Library: The University’s library is known for its modern infrastructure (80,000 square feet), fully air-conditioned, WiFi-enabled, services for the Visually Challenged, proactive services with RFID technology, and 24/7 remote access to a collection of 5.82 lakhs, of which 2.48 lakhs are print and 3.34 lakhs are e-resources (e-books, e-databases, e-journals, e-theses, and so on).
  • Green Campus: The University has established a Green Campus office to promote sustainability and responsible environmental management on campus, with the goal of reducing the institution's environmental footprint and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and reverse the RED. The Green Campus office also promotes awareness and education about sustainability issues, as well as fosters a culture of environmental responsibility and stewardship among students, faculty, staff, and the wider community.
  • Canteens: Three different canteens on campus serve the tastes of the University's students, faculty, employees, and guests. The canteens serve South Indian meals, Chinese cuisine, and North Indian Cuisine, including chats at reasonable rates with special offers from time to time.
  • Hostels: Pondicherry University now has 22 hostels on campus, 14 for boys and 8 for girls. Ten of the fourteen boys' hostels are for postgraduate students and four are for research scholars. Seven of the eight female hostels are for PG students, while one is for Research Scholars. There are 2 hostels on the Karaikal Campus, one for boys and one for girls. Port Blair Campus also has one boys' hostel and one girls' hostel.
