Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) was established under the Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Act of 1999 (Act No. XII of 1999 dated 12th May 1999) as an autonomous, highly technical, and fully residential university. The university commenced its academic activities in August 2004 and was formally inaugurated on 19th August 2004 by the then Honerable President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who also delivered the first lecture to the students. SMVDU is the first fully residential and technical university of its kind in Jammu and Kashmir. Recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act of 1956, SMVDU receives funding from the UGC.
