Gandhigram is located in a valley formed by the stunning Sirumalai Hills to the east and the breathtaking Kodai Hills to the west. The lush landscaping on campus reflects the greenery of the hills. The campus's rocky subsurface formation is an extension of the Sirumalai mountain, on whose foothills GRI is located. GRI's campus includes a number of historic sites and monuments.
In 1956, the Gandhigram Rural Institute Library was established. It relocated to its current location in 1987, with approximately 1.79 lakh books and 284 printed Indian journals in a distinct journal area. The Library is named after Dr. G. Ramachandran, the University's Founder and Vice-Chancellor. It has a computerized circulation service and an OPAC to assess the availability of documents (books, etc.). For issuing and returning books, KOHA Open Source Software combined with RFID Technology is used.
