GRE Exam Subjects

Analytical Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning are the three sections of the GRE.

Verbal Reasoning

This section measures a candidate's ability to understand and analyse written material and to express ideas clearly and effectively. Questions on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and critical thinking are all included. The verbal reasoning section is comprised of three types of questions-

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Sentence Equivalence
  • Text Completion

Reading comprehension questions

are designed to test a candidate’s ability to understand and interpret written material. After reading each passage they have to identify the main idea, make inferences, draw conclusions, and analyse the author's tone and the purpose of the question.

Text completion questions

require candidates to choose the most suitable word(s) or phrase(s) to fill in the blanks. These questions assess their vocabulary and ability to comprehend the meaning of the sentence in context. The two words or phrases chosen must produce sentences that are equivalent in meaning.

In the Sentence equivalence part, candidates will be given a single sentence that has a blank space and they have to choose two words or phrases from a list of six answer choices that would make the sentence complete and grammatically correct.
