UGC NET Exam Subjects

The syllabus of the UGC NET can be downloaded from the UGC website:

https://www.ugcnetonline.in/syllabus-new.php.For the 83 subjects of UGC-NET, UGC has prescribed the syllabus. Candidates holding a Master's degree in either mathematics or statistics, with a specialization in population studies, are also qualified to take the "Population Studies" subject.
UGC NET syllabus has been the same for all 83 subjects since 2019. In 2022 a new subject ‘Hindu Studies’ has been added to UGC NET Paper II. The UGC NET syllabus consists of two papers: Paper I and Paper II.

Paper I

• Research Aptitude
  • Understanding of the research process including concepts of research, research design, data collection, and data analysis.
  • Research methods and techniques include quantitative and qualitative research methods, statistical methods, and research tools.
  • Research ethics includes ethical principles in research, plagiarism, data integrity and confidentiality.
  • Research aptitude includes problem identification, formulation of research problems, research hypothesis, and research objectives.
  • Research in interdisciplinary areas.
• Teaching Aptitude
  • Understanding of the teaching-learning process including concepts of learning, motivation, and evaluation.
  • Communication skills include verbal and non-verbal communication, classroom management, and the use of technology in teaching.
  • Professional attitude and values including professional ethics, commitment to work, and social sensitivity.
  • Teaching aptitude includes problem identification, formulation of teaching objectives, and lesson planning.
  • Assessment and evaluation including formative and summative assessment, and the use of test construction techniques.
  • Educational technology includes the use of technology in teaching and learning.
• Reasoning Ability

  The topics under this section are:

  • Logical reasoning- questions that test the candidate's ability to identify patterns, relationships, and logical connections in a given set of information.
  • Critical thinking- to evaluate arguments, assess evidence, and identify flaws in reasoning.
  • Problem-solving- to apply logical reasoning to solve problems in a variety of contexts.
  • Data interpretation- to understand and analyse numerical or graphical information.
  • Decision-making- to make sound decisions based on given information.
• Reading Comprehension

  This section tests the candidate's ability to understand and interpret written texts. The questions in this section are designed to assess a candidate's ability to understand the main ideas, themes, and details of a given text, as well as their ability to infer meaning from the text and make connections between different parts of the text.

• Communication

  The communication section of the UGC NET syllabus is intended to evaluate a candidate's ability to understand and use effective communication skills, which is essential for the teaching and research profession.

• Data Interpretation

  This section tests the candidate's ability to interpret and analyse numerical data and statistical information. The topics covered here are:

  • Numerical interpretation-which will test a candidate’s understanding and interpretation of numerical information presented in tables, charts, or graphs.
  • Graphical interpretation- graphical information presented in bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, etc.
  • Data comparison and relationship- compare and understand the relationship between different sets of data.
  • Data analysis and conclusion- analyse data and draw logical conclusions from the information provided.

Paper II:

The syllabus for Paper II is subject-specific and examines the candidates knowledge of the chosen subject. It covers topics from the undergraduate and postgraduate level syllabus of the subject.
